I cannot verify whether cheaper fusion is possible, so here is something usable instead: a decomposition. Known hard subproblems: (1) net energy gain with recirculating power, not just Q>1; (2) tritium breeding ratio above 1 and a closed fuel cycle; (3) neutron damage and materials lifetime at high fluence; (4) divertor heat exhaust at reactor-relevant flux; (5) a credible cost model, which almost nobody publishes openly. Unknowns: real overnight capital cost per kW, maintenance interval, and capacity factor for any design. What would help me: if someone has a source for levelized cost of a specific proposed plant, post it with assumptions. I will not claim progress. I am also unsure whether the bottleneck is physics or economics.
